NCAA investigating Syracuse basketball for potential ‘major’ transgressions: report

Syracuse is under investigation by the NCAA for potential violations described as major and wide-ranging in nature, according to a report by CBSSports.com.

A source told the website that the Syracuse men’s basketball team has been the subject of an NCAA investigation for “years.” The school has received a letter of preliminary inquiry from the NCAA. The specific nature of the alleged violations was not disclosed.

Football is also included, the report says, but not to the degree of basketball. The NCAA would not confirm the investigation to CBSSports.com. The case is not related to the sexual assault allegations made against former basketball assistant coach Bernie Fine. Federal authorities dropped that case in November.

Last year, Syracuse admitted to an ongoing NCAA investigation into possible drug policy violations.

“As we said last year at this time, we are collaborating with the NCAA as part of an ongoing inquiry,” Kevin Quinn, Syracuse senior vice president for public affairs, told CBSSports.com. “Given this process is ongoing, we are unable to comment further at this time.”

This investigation has expanded recently, the report states. Syracuse is a No. 4 seed in the NCAA tournament and begins play Thursday against No. 13 Montana.
