‘Game of Thrones’ could outrun books

Is HBO in jeopardy of making the hit series “Game of Thrones” so fast that soon it will be catching up to books before they’re written?

The shows are coming every year (Season 3 debuted last night). But it takes about five years to write each book, fans are saying.

George RR Martin, author of the mammoth series of books, worries about it too, according to the Hollywood Reporter,

“It’s true that they’re moving faster than I am,” he said, “The series has its own speed.

“But I don’t see us catching up for another three years or so — by which time another book will be out. That should give them another two seasons of material. And while I’m writing the last book, they’d be making those.”

Martin’s last book, “A Dance With Dragons,” was the fifth of a projected seven-book series.

The third season covers the first half of book three, “A Storm of Swords.”

“There are other HBO shows that have had long gaps between series,” says Martin, noting that “The Sopranos” took more than a year between seasons.

“I’m just hoping the series will finish. I know the books will finish,” he said.
