METS’ SHEAMFUL RETREAT

THE ISSUE: The closing of Shea Stadium at the conclusion of the Mets’ heartbreaking season.

In the first eight years of Joan Payson’s founding ownership of the Mets, we got a wonderful world championship in 1969 (“Shea It Ain’t So!” Sept 29).

In the first seven years of the Doubleday-Wilpon partnership, we got the 1986 title.

During these first several years of the Wilpons’ sole ownership of the franchise, we’ve had chokers, managerial jokers and a con man named Omar Minaya.

After breaking our hearts two years in a row on the final day of the season, if the Mets’ management has any expectation of our coming to Citifield next year, it had better go out and buy a bullpen.

When Yankee Stadium closed, The Post gave it three days of coverage and a special pullout section. Yet Shea Stadium closes to minimal fanfare.

I understand that Yankee Stadium was around a lot longer – but, like many New Yorkers, I have many great memories of Shea and will be very sad to see it go.

I have been a die-hard fan since 1971 and have watched the heroes of my youth, along with some players we would like to forget at Shea.

Though the times have not always been great or even good. And Shea Stadium will be gone in a few months, the memories we made there will remain with us forever.
