Basically a YouTube short stretched way beyond endurance to feature length, Dan Eckman’s “Mystery Team” is a spoof of the Encyclopedia Brown stories from the sketch troupe known as Derrick Comedy.
There is only one joke here, milked endlessly. A band of 7-year-old detectives charging 10 cents a case has continued working way past their expiration dates, well into their perpetually arrested adolescence.
Wearing preposterous disguises, the naive boys (Donald Glover, D.C. Pierson, Dominic Dierkes, Aubrey Plaza) get on their Schwinns and find themselves embroiled in a different kind of case that takes them into contact with drugs, a very naked woman and other new experiences.
