Three-peat for ‘Goldbergs,’ ‘Trophy Wife’

ABC has ordered three more scripts for each of its two Tuesday comedies “The Goldbergs” and “Trophy Wife.”

The orders, though they don’t guarantee an episode pick-up, come after “Goldbergs” and “Trophy Wife” hit viewership lows for their most recent episodes — 5.1 million and 4 million viewers, respectively.

The ’80s-set “Goldbergs” did gain 2.2 million viewers for its premiere episode when seven days of DVR playback was factored in.

The family sitcom “Trophy Wife,” meanwhile, improved 29 percent in the key adults 18-49 demo.

The two ABC sitcoms join Fox’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” in receiving additional script orders, though no new comedies have yet earned full-season orders. New dramas “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (ABC) and “The Blacklist” NBC have been picked up for full seasons while “Sleepy Hollow” (Fox) has already been renewed for a second season of 13 episodes.

Through the first three weeks of the new TV season, ABC’s total audience has slipped nearly 6 percent from a year ago — to 7.4 million viewers.
