POWER OUT FOR E. SIDE RESIDENTS

Another warm summer day brought another blackout on the Upper East Side yesterday.

Some residents lost power for about 12 hours.

A manhole fire at 4:45 a.m. led to the afternoon outage for 650 Con Ed customers on the block bordered by First and York avenues on 78th and 79th streets, the company said.

The fire didn’t knock out power immediately – but by late morning, people in the area noticed air conditioners and other major power-consuming appliances weren’t working.

By noon, the situation worsened and power in the area was cut off completely, said Con Ed spokesman Bob McGee.

Con Ed officials said the cause of the fires was being investigated. Power wasn’t fully restored in the area until just before midnight last night.

The same area was hit in the much wider outage last week that also struck Yorkville, Randalls Island and parts of the West Bronx.
