The state Senate passed legislation yesterday to authorize e-mail alerts to residents when a sex offender moves into their ZIP code.
The bill passed, 60-0, with two senators not voting.
Its sponsor, Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), said he’s trying to protect kids.
“There’s 11,428 Level 2 and 3 sexual predators living around the state of New York, sometimes near schools, day-care centers and parks,” he said.
New York’s Division of Criminal Justice Services already lists such information on Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders on its Web site. Klein said e-mail alerts will ensure concerned parents will be notified immediately.
A companion bill is being reviewed by the Assembly’s Corrections Committee.
The division’s Web site lists 10,313 Level 2 and 7,184 Level 3 sex offenders, with some 2,000 living out of state, 2,300 incarcerated and about 1,000 deported. They are listed for life.
