BLOOMBERG’S BOZO-BIKER BOOST

Mayor Bloomberg says he wants to make New York more pedestrian- friendly.

But instead of summarily banning motor-vehicle traffic from Broadway in Times Square — which he’s doing starting tomorrow — Mike might want to start cracking down on the real menace to walk-a-day New Yorkers.

That would be out-of-control bicyclists.

A recent Hunter College study confirms what most city-dwellers already know: Gotham’s cyclists are some of the most hard-core — and dangerous — lawbreakers on the road.

Researchers observing more than 5,000 cyclists at 45 Midtown intersections last month discovered that fully 37 percent ran red lights, while nearly 30 percent didn’t use designated bike lanes.

And, amazingly, more than 13 percent were caught riding against traffic.

(Plus, those figures don’t include cycle stunts like the ones pulled every so often by the wannabe anarchists of Critical Mass — which ties up traffic just for the bloody hell of it.)

Alas, bikes are “green,” so the eco-conscious Mayor Mike is doing his best to re-sculpt the city for their convenience.

Part of his Broadway experiment, for instance, shuts down an entire lane of vehicle traffic in Midtown for bikes.

Problem is, Manhattan’s bustling grid — which requires cars and trucks for its commercial lifeblood — isn’t built for that kind of abuse.

Not all cyclists are lawbreakers, of course — but we suspect Bloomberg will soon run up against the unintended consequences of his pedal-powered cheerleading.

After all, when was the last time you saw a taxi driving the wrong way on a one-way street?
