Most of statewide canal system closing until 2014

ALBANY — The New York Canal Corp. plans to close the statewide canal system this Friday until next year.

Most sections of the system, which means about 524 miles across upstate New York, are scheduled to close at 5 p.m. Nov. 15.

The inland waterway includes the Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca canals also connecting to several lakes.

Erie Canal between locks 12 and 14 between Tribes Hill and Canajoharie will reopen from Sunday through Wednesday, when it’s scheduled to close for the season.
