Manhattan security blanket

Lower Manhattan will be in a state of lockdown not seen since 9/11 when accused mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed goes on trial in federal court for that attack.

Police dogs, mounted patrols and thousands of interlocking metal barriers will blanket a 132-acre area roughly bounded by Canal Street to the north, Broadway to the west, Park Place and Frankfort Street to the south, and Pearl Street, St. James Place and the Bowery to the east.

At its extremes, the outer zone is about 0.7 miles long and a half-mile wide.

An inner, hyper-protected zone will include the federal and state courthouses and several government office buildings.

Officials expect taxpayers will shell out around $200 million a year to cover security and other costs for the trial.
