TiVo adds features, devices

TiVo has gotten a major makeover.

In a bid to stay ahead of the technological transformation taking place in television, TiVo has for the first time in its 13-year history completely revamped the look, feel and features of its set-top box.

Today the company introduces two new devices, the Premiere and Premiere XL, that give consumers more high-definition capacity, easier search functionality and deeper content engagement.

New features include an on-screen disk space meter, a “six-degrees of separation” component for tracking actor resumes and cast relationships, and an Adobe Flash platform that will let developers build applications like those available at Apple’s App Store.

The new boxes also have Internet connectivity, which lets users stream or download television shows, movies, Web videos and music on-demand.

The TiVo Premiere box retails for $299 and features 45 hours of high-definition and 400 hours of standard programming storage capacity. The TiVo Premiere XL retails for $499 and contains 150 hours of high-def and 1,350 hours of standard storage capacity.

TiVo hopes to increase its market share by attracting new subscribers to the service.
