LI lawyer gets up to 10 years for stealing from clients

A disbarred New York attorney will spend up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to stealing more than $4 million from clients and banks.

James Kalpakis of Old Westbury pleaded guilty to grand larceny in September.

He was sentenced Thursday to three and one-third to 10 years in prison. He also must pay $4.3 million in restitution.

Nassau County prosecutors say Kalpakis stole the money while representing clients in real estate deals between September 2008 and January 2011.

They say he also forged his wife’s name on documents in 2008 for $1.1 million in a mortgage refinancing scheme.

Prosecutors say his wife knew nothing about the loan.
