NJ heists a Beemer bummer

Car thieves snatched a rare BMW bound for the Javits Center auto show as it sat in a processing center at a New Jersey port, sources said yesterday.

The 550i Sophisto — the only one in this country — was among six Beemers stolen in three heists at the Port Authority-owned lot in Jersey City and at a private facility in Elizabeth, sources said.

The $90,000 sedan was driven off early on March 13 from the BMW Port Jersey preparation center in Jersey City. It was supposed to go on display at the New York International Auto Show.

At least three thieves broke into the lot just after 2 a.m. and drove off in the Sophisto, a 535xi and a 650i, sources said.

They returned Monday night and swiped a 750 LXI. On Wednesday night, the gang is believed to have swiped at least one Beemer from a company facility in Elizabeth.

“We . . . provided all the information to the authorities,” a BMW spokesman said.
