Softball roundup: Madison rallies past Molloy at Preston tourney

The first day of the Preston softball tournament was highlighted by a come-from-behind win by James Madison.

The Knights trailed by three runs early, but rallied for a 5-4 win over defending Brooklyn/Queens champion Archbishop Molloy on Monday afternoon at Colucci Field in The Bronx.

Madison scored twice in the fourth inning on doubles by Breanna DePasquale, Kayla Hill and Gina Gerone, after scoring twice in the bottom of the second. Molloy got two on with two out in the seventh, but Hill shut the door. She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits and struck out four.

The Stanners led 4-1 after an inning and a half. Jackie Perillo hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run first inning. Madison added a run in the bottom of the inning and Joanna Makayan extended the Molloy lead when she scored on an overthrow to second base in its half of the second. The Knights closed the gap to 4-3 off Stanners ace Maria Palmeri, who allowed four earned runs on nine hits and struck out six. Nikki Panaro doubled home Gerone and Samantha Rodrguez followed with an RBI single.

Both teams beat Maria Regina. Melissa Kump and Victoria Goldbach combined for a one hitter and struck out nine in Molloy’s 14-0 win. Julia Lipovac was 2-for-3 with four RBIs during a 10-run first inning.

Bishop Kearney 8, Mary Louis 5: Tiffany Irrera’s RBI double gave Kearney the lead for good in a three-run top of the eighth inning. She also struck out seven for the win. Jill Zic’s RBI single and Stephanie Barbaro’s two-run double tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh. Zic was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Erin Guilfoyle allowed seven earned runs on six hits with nine strikeouts for TMLA.

Bishop Kearney 15,
Preston
3: Amanda Sinodinos delivered a two-run first inning homer to get Kearney rolling. Preston played without five starters, including senior Laura Montalto and Nicole Cavigliano and pitcher Kristie Davidow.

Mary Louis 11, Preston 7: Rebecca Warne allowed three earned runs, struck out five and walked just one for Mary Louis. Preston scored four runs in the first inning thanks to TMLA miscues and got a three-run homer from Jessica Kerrigan. Krystal Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Hilltoppers. Shannon Minihane collected two hits and drove in two runs and Julie Canova added a double and an RBI.

PSAL CLASS A

Environmental Studies 11, Hunter 1: Charlotte Bradley was 3-for-4 with a homer, four RBIs and two runs scored for Environmental Studies (1-0) in Manhattan A. Alberta Jordan went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Jocelyn Jimenez threw a six-inning one-hitter and struck out nine. Hunter is 1-2.

NON-LEAGUE

St. Joseph by the Sea 4, Kellenberg 0: Amanda Barrese scattered five hits and struck out six for the complete game win for St. Joseph by the Sea in a non-league game. Maria Scopellito tripled and scored a run and Sammi Lou Anastasio doubled and drove in two.
