‘The Help’ to have 1st Mississippi showing July 30

GREENWOOD, Miss. — The Mississippi premiere of “The Help” will be July 30 in Madison.

That’s a change from what director Tate Taylor said he was hoping to do. Much of the movie was filmed in Greenwood, and Taylor told the local leaders in May that he intended to screen the movie there before its Aug. 12 release.

Greenwood no longer has a movie theater. The Greenwood Commonwealth reports that industrial board chairman Bill Crump says it would be too expensive to bring in equipment for a premiere.

Based on Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel set in 1960s Jackson, the movie explores the relationship between black maids and their white employers, with the emergence of the civil rights movement.

The movie co-stars Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard and Octavia Spencer.
