Two-alarm Rikers fire; no one hurt

A two-alarm fire broke out in a Rikers Island jail this evening, forcing 200 inmates to be relocated to cells in other buildings.

The blaze started inside an air conditioning room on the second floor of the George Motchan Detention Center, which houses general population inmates, at 8:13 p.m., an FDNY spokesman said.

Correction officers started evacuating the inmates after smoke began seeping out of vents, said Sharman Stein, a spokeswoman for the Department of Correction.

No inmates or correction officers were injured, said Stein.

A total of 106 firefighters were battling the two-alarm fire. The cause was not immediately determined.
