Ex-Post reporter dies of breast cancer at 59

Margie Feinberg

Margie Feinberg, a former Post reporter who served with distinction as a deputy press secretary under six school chancellors, died Thursday night after a battle with breast cancer.
She would have turned 60 on June 27.
Feinberg used to tell friends that her best memories came from her time as a Post transit reporter when she covered “anything that moved” — cars, buses, subway, ferries and commuter trains.
She worked at the paper from 1981 to 1990.

In 1999, Feinberg became a spokeswoman for the school system, earning accolades from reporters to chancellors to mayors before retiring in 2014.

Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña recalled how Feinberg came to her rescue when she was a principal and was terrified about a story that was “less than complimentary” scheduled to break the following day.
“I was frantic, but Margie calmly walked me through what I needed to do and say, and the next day went smoothly,” Fariña said.
Tributes poured in from fellow reporters, who said Feinberg faced life with a smile no matter the situation.
Funeral services will be held at Riverside Memorial Chapel at 180 W. 76th St. on Monday at noon. Shiva calls will be on the lower level of the nearby Hotel Beacon following the service.
