Jim Calhoun: I’ll coach if situation is right

Jim Calhoun isn’t closing the door on his coaching future.

The former UConn coach, who’s been in the news of late amidst rumors he would consider coaching Boston College, said on WFAN he would be open to a comeback if the right situation presented itself.

“I would. … I’m just being very honest with you,” he said Wednesday afternoon. “I feel good, my health seems to be great, which it wasn’t when I stepped down.

“I’ll never ever say never.”

Calhoun, 71, stepped down before the start of last season, after having suffered a broken hip in a bike-riding fall. He led the Huskies to three national championships, four Final Fours and seven Big East Tournament titles in 26 seasons after 14 years coaching Northeastern. Calhoun, a Braintree, Mass., product, said he isn’t interested in the vacant Boston College job.

“If it’s the right university, the right situation for me, I’d bring along a young coach, one of my former players who now are coaching,” Calhoun said. “I don’t have plans do that. If the right situation came along from the right university, I certainly would consider it.”
