Derek Jeter’s top 10 moments

Derek Jeter has produced no shortage of iconic moments during his 19 seasons with the Yankees. We’ll see if he can top them in 2014, which he announced Wednesday will be his final go-round before retirement.

  1. 1. The 3,000th hit

Jeter homered to left off Tampa Bay’s David Price on July 9, 2011 to become the first Yankee to reach the milestone. It was one of five hits Jeter got that day in The Bronx, including the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth in a 5-4 victory.

  2. 2. The Flip

In Game 3 of the 2001 ALDS in Oakland, Shane Spencer’s throw from right is wildly overthrown, leaving Alfonso Soriano and Tino Martinez helpless on the play. Jeter raced toward the first base line, grabbed the ball and while his momentum carried him away from the play, managed to flip the ball to Jorge Posada to get Jeremy Giambi (who failed to slide) at the plate and preserve a 1-0 lead.

  3. 3. Mr. November

Jeter hits a walk-off homer off Arizona’s Byung-Hyun Kim on Nov. 1, 2001 to tie the World Series at 2-2. The series was played later than in previous years because of the Sept. 11 attacks. Tino Martinez had tied the game with a homer off Kim, then, shortly after midnight on Nov. 1, Jeter ended it with a shot in the 10th.

  4. 4. Thanks, Jeffrey Maier

In Game 1 of the 1996 ALCS against the Orioles, Jeter lofted a fly ball to right, where Tony Tarasco appeared to be ready to make the catch. But Maier, an 11-year-old Yankee fan at the time, reached over the fence and deflected it over the fence. Umpire Rich Garcia ruled that it was a home run and not spectator interference and the Yankees tied the game, 4-4 and won it on Bernie Williams’ homer in the 11th.

  5. 5. The dive into the stands

In the top of the 12th on July 1, 2004 against the Red Sox in The Bronx, Jeter raced to catch up to a Trot Nixon popup with runners on second and third, famously crashing into the stands and emerging with a bloodied face- and the ball. The Yankees won the game in the bottom of the inning

  6. 6. A Subway spark

After the Yankees dropped Game 3 of the World Series to the Mets in 2000 to make the series 2-1, Jeter homered on the first pitch of the following game off Bobby Jones and the Yankees went on to win the game 3-2 and the Series in five games.

  7. 7. Meet the Captain

On June 3, 2003, Jeter was named Yankees captain, the 11th in team history and first since Don Mattingly retired in 1995.

  8. 8. A new Yankees hits leader

On Sept. 11, 2009, Jeter’s third-inning single off Baltimore’s Chris Tillman gave him hit No. 2,722, surpassing Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig on the team’s all-time list.

  9. 9. His very first hit

After going 0-for-5 in his major league debut, Jeter broke through on May 30, 1995 against the Mariners with a single to left off Tim Belcher in his second at-bat of a 7-3 loss in Seattle.

  10. 10. Draft day, 1992

Jeter was drafted sixth overall in 1992. By 1994, he was named the minor league player of the year. AP

The Yankees made Jeter the sixth overall pick on June 27, 1992, after the teams ahead of them believed he would ask for too much money or go to college at Michigan. Instead, he signed with the Yankees and made his major league debut less than three years later.
