B’klyn stage thief steals the show

A thief broke into a Brooklyn front yard and stole a pair of heavy, fold-up stage platforms that weigh about 400 pounds a piece.

The 4-foot-by-8-foot sections were snatched from a theater director’s property on 12th Street between Fourth and Fifth avenues early Wednesday.

“The whole thing really blows my mind,” said Caitlin Michener, 25, who works as both an actress and a director for Kipuka Theatre, an experimental-theater company in Park Slope.

Michener stored the platforms outside because they weighed too much to lug up to her apartment.

She said she didn’t file a police report because she first wanted to see if she could spot the stages for sale on craigslist.

She also reached out for help on the Web site Reddit, and had a change in fortune.

A man named Peter contacted her from Mad Arts, an art facility on 18th Street in Park Slope, and gave her two of his own platforms for free. Kipuka will be able to use them at its upcoming Bushwick show on May 10.

“The kindness of New Yorkers is astounding,” said Michener. “It’s incredible that he’s willing to help us out.”
