City gets $800M tax boost for budget

The city has taken in an extra $800 million from capital-gains taxes this year, but the revenue will be offset by other unexpected costs, sources told The Post.

Mayor Bloomberg will announce the windfall today when he unveils next year’s budget— his last as mayor. The money will be used partly for the current year’s budget and for the Fiscal Year 2014 budget.

The boon came after New Yorkers rushed to dispose of their assets by Jan. 1, when the federal capital-gains tax jumped from 15 percent to 23.8 percent for couples making more $450,000 and singles making more than $400,000.

A big chunk of the new cash will be used to offset reduced revenue projections for the sale of new taxi medallions.

Bloomberg will announce he is reducing the expected revenue from the taxi-medallion sale in half to $300 million in the Fiscal Year 2014 budget.

The sale is dependent upon a broader outer-borough taxi plan, which is being held up in court.

The mayor will also announce extra spending this year on the Board of Elections.
