Five-alarm fire in the Bronx under control; only minor injuries reported

Firefighters battled a five-alarm inferno in the Bronx this morning, which also snarled subway service, authorities said.

The blaze began in Wakefield about 6:15 a.m. on White Plains Road near 226th Street and spread to eight other buildings, according to an FDNY spokesman.

The fire department says 10 firefighters were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. A pedestrian was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. The blaze was brought under control at 9:46 a.m.

The fire, near the 225th Street stop, also created headaches for commuters this morning.

There is no 2 and 5 train service between Gun Hill Road and 241st Street, according to the MTA Web site. Riders are asked to use the B39 instead.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the flames.
