South Dakota officials are finally moving to change the names of more than a dozen small towns, dating back to at least the 19th century, in the state that are generally believed to be offensive.
Typical of the names are “Negro Gulch” and “Squaw Humper Dam.”

The City Council of Monona has passed an ordinance that fiscally roughs up parents of bullies, with $114 fines for the first offense and $177 for additional ones.
Officials say they impose the fines only as a last resort, against parents who are uncooperative with school guidance counselors.
