IT’S ‘DOOMSDAY’ FOR HOWARD: HIS NEW TV ROLE IS A REAL DOG

HOWARD Stern will produce and star in an animated science-fiction comedy series for UPN debuting in fall 2000.

The show, called “Doomsday,” follows the adventures of the Bradley family, who drive a mobile home across a post-apocalyptic America in search of “traditional family values and a new home.”

Along the way, the Bradleys are harassed by mutated humans, a band of barbaric road warriors, 50-foot hillbillies and the IRS – the only branch of the government to survive the devastation.

Stern will play the voice of Orinthal, the family dog.

“‘Doomsday’ is the kind of animated TV project I want to produce,” Stern said in a statement. “It’s edgy and funny and network-acceptable. My only regret is there are no lesbians in the story. It has always been my ambition to work alongside Urkel. I know we can make UPN household letters and really put ’em on the map.”

While Stern is listed as producer, “Doomsday” was created and developed by Tracy Torme (“Sliders”) – who is the son of the late jazz singer, Mel Torme.

Word that the show has been in development has been circulating quietly for months, but the decision to air it on UPN raised some eyebrows yesterday.

Stern’s highly-rated radio show is owned by Infinity Broadcasting, a division of CBS. In the wake of the Viacom/CBS merger, the low-rated UPN is on its way to becoming CBS’ sister network.

“The Viacom/CBS merger has yet to be felt on our side,” UPN’s entertainment chief, Tom Nunan, told The Post. “We were negotiating on this long before the merger.”
