Mets put Maine on disabled list with ‘shoulder weakness’

The Mets placed John Maine on the disabled list today despite the pitcher maintaining he feels the same as he has all season.

A day removed from being pulled from a game in Washington after one batter, Maine said before the announcement he didn’t know the the DL was coming.

“They didn’t tell me anything,” Maine said in front of his locker before the Subway Series opener at Citi Field. “They haven’t said anything about anything.”

Maine reiterated that he feels no different than he has all season and that there was no reason to pull him after he walked Nyjer Morgan on five pitches to start Thursday’s game.

The Mets said Maine is suffering from right shoulder weakness and will undergo tests next week at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Maine had shoulder surgery after the 2008 season.

Maine argued with Jerry Manuel about being pulled Thursday, but the manager was convinced the pitcher was not OK.

“My gut tells me there’s something there [physically wrong],” Manuel said before tonight’s game. “I could be totally wrong.”

Maine was placed on the 15-day DL, replaced on the roster by Buffalo (Triple-A) pitcher Elmer Dessens, who was expected to arrive at Citi Field tonight.

“I’m looking for something,” Maine said before the game. “I don’t know if I’m gonna start, gonna pitch, if I’m going to Florida. I don’t know if I’m going to the doctor. I haven’t heard a thing.”

To make room on the 40-man roster for Dessens, pitcher Kelvim Escobar was moved to the 60-day disabled list.
