They went under the knife to get thin, but never lived long enough to lose the weight.
Danielle Delango, 25, of Yonkers suddenly collapsed and died less than two months after weight-loss surgery. Her family claims in a lawsuit that the Allergan lap band, implanted to reduce the size of her stomach, was defective.
They’re suing Allergan and NY Presbyterian Healthcare System and Lawrence Hospital Center, where Delango had her Jan. 15, 2008, surgery.
Rebecca Quatinetz, 27, died 66 days after her May 29, 2009, surgery at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, according to the April 5 lawsuit filed by her mother, Stephanie Quatinetz of Scarsdale.
The Food and Drug Administration says the procedure is meant for severely obese adults with another unhealthy condition, like diabetes.
Neither woman met those specifications, their mothers said, and had signed up for the surgery after attending an informational seminar on lap-band procedures.
“The whole thing is that people think it’s very safe, and neither of our daughters were so morbidly obese,” Stephanie Quatinetz said.
Allergan declined to comment.
