Kids evacuated after fire breaks out at Brooklyn school

Firefighters battled a blaze at a Brooklyn school this afternoon, authorities said.

A small fire began about 1:35 p.m. at Satellite West Middle School in Downtown Brooklyn on York Street, near Gold Street, and was quickly extinguished, according to an FDNY spokesman.

Kashawn Small, 12, said he was in English class when he smelled smoke and yelled that there was a fire. “The teacher didn’t believe me, but then we saw smoke in the hall,” he said. “A lot of people were crying and running down the stairs.”

The children were evacuated from the school, and dismissed, according to a DOE spokesman.

Students said they were frightened by the blaze.

“The whole room was on fire, then the lights in the room went out,” said Darien Chalmers, 13, a sixth-grader. “It was scary, my heart was beating fast.”

No one was hurt.
