Bronx man pleads guilty in fatal upstate DWI crash

A New York City man has admitted to driving drunk and crashing last year on an upstate road, killing a 22-year-old woman riding in his vehicle.

The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports that 52-year-old Luis Vargas of the Bronx pleaded guilty Thursday in Orange County Court to vehicular manslaughter in the April 10 crash near Fort Montgomery, on the Hudson River 45 miles north of New York City.

Penelope Veras-Ortiz was killed in the crash and three other people riding in Vargas’ van were injured.

Vargas is expected to be sentenced to four years in prison next month.
