Knicks fearful of losing ‘Melo to Nets

LOS ANGELES–As far as I know nothing has changed in the last 24 hours that leads me to believe the Nets are no longer favored to beat out the Knicks for Carmelo Anthony.

Their four-day proposition to the Nuggets is utterly irresistible. Unless the Knicks try to further top it over All-Star weekend–Anthony says he wants something in stone before leaving here — Josh Kroenke is poised to jump all over it.

Logically, that plainly challenges a Daily News report that claimed James Dolan met here Thursday with Anthony.

For what purpose?

Clearly, Anthony prefers to be traded to the Knicks vs. the Nets.

Either the Knicks want him as bad as he wants them or they’ve offered as much as they’re willing to offer.

So, why the (pretend) meeting?

What’s more, why would the Nuggets grant Dolan permission?

The whole story makes sub-zero sense.

Even if Dolan did meet with Anthony Thursday — something ‘Melo denies — who gives a hydro-electric damn?

It doesn’t lock up the Knicks’ chances of signing him for the next four years. That only can happen by adding coveted players and potentially ideally located first round real estate management long since surrendered.

Now let’s look at the latest offering: The Knicks have raised their bid to include Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari, a phantom No. 1 pick — by way of Minnesota, perhaps, to assume Eddy Curry’s expiring contract — for Anthony and Chauncey Billups.

Assuming it is true, then how come the deal isn’t done? If that’s the meat of the package the Nuggets purportedly were demanding (initally deemed too high by Knicks team president Donnie Walsh) how come Kroenke hasn’t already accepted?

Additionally, if the above development is true, why are the Nets continuing to romance Anthony?

If it seems I’m being overly dubious about everything written about Anthony, I apologize.

Then again, I figure at least one or two of you might feel similarly led astray.

The Russian’s coming! Dolan’s coming! Elvis is coming! And they’re all meeting with Anthony — though Mikhail Prokhorov is the only one of the three yet to have it scheduled.

I’ll tell you what I think (operative word) is really going on here. The Nets have made the Knicks significantly nervous. Consequently, they have thrown every thing out there to clutter up the climate in an effort to derail Anthony’s trade to New Jersey.

Guaranteed, we dis cover Isiah Thomas is distributing much, if not all, of the widespread disinfor mation.

Guaranteed, Thomas is telling Dolan not to listen to Walsh; give the Nuggets what ever they want . . . that it isn’t often an established official scorer of Anthony’s pedigreed is available, whereas the Knicks can always find role players like Felton, Chandler and Gallinari.

Guaranteed, Thomas is positioning himself to take over for Walsh by promising Dolan he’ll be able to recruit Chris Paul the summer after next. Guaranteed, if Dolan has taken control of this situation, as alleged, Walsh will be rejoining his wife in Indianapolis on a permanent basis as soon as the season is over.

I wanted to ask Thomas about all of the above, but he didn’t return my phone call.

In closing, if the Nuggets hold a press conference today and they don’t announce when Anthony is going, I plan to stand up and throw a shoe.
