Poughkeepsie cop died in struggle

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — A police officer was killed by a wounded, bleeding gunman who first shot his wife and then himself in a parked car, Poughkeepsie police chief Ron Knapp told a news conference yesterday.

Officer John Falcone, 44, was killed by a bullet to the head fired by Lee Welch, 27, as he struggled with the police on Friday after killing his wife, the Dutchess County medical examiner found. Welch died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.
