Dolan family cancels July 4th fireworks display year after fatal boat accident

OYSTER BAY — A popular July 4th fireworks display at the suburban New York estate of a well-known billionaire has been cancelled.

The announcement reported Thursday by Newsday comes a year after a fatal boat accident involving spectators at the annual celebration.

A statement from the Dolan family said there were a number of private reasons for the cancellation.

The Dolan family, led by Cablevision chairman Charles Dolan, owns several properties on Oyster Bay harbor.

A 34-foot boat with 27 passengers capsized last summer leaving the fireworks show. Three children were killed.

No criminal charges were filed.

Police said at the time the Dolans had the proper permits to operate a fireworks display.
