CAMBY: I HAD POSITION

INDIANAPOLIS – Marcus Camby thought he had proper position. Antonio Davis admitted he wasn’t all that certain, but with the way the game had gone all night, he was sure a foul would be called.

Davis admitted if he had been assessed with a charge with :31.1 left, he would not have been surprised.

Instead, ref Dick Bavetta signaled block on Camby and the entire Knick bench went into a coronary danger zone. Davis’ four-footer went in to forge an 86-86 tie but he missed the subsequent free throw.

”I thought I was there. I don’t know if I was inside the dotted line or not,” said Camby, who was supremely diplomatic in a Knick locker room where words should as ”screwed” and ”robbed” were common place.

”I tried to make a conscious effort to get outside the dotted line. He called me for the block. That situation happens some times,” Camby said.

Davis’ take after he heard the whistle was he wasn’t sure who was getting penalized.

”I didn’t know at that point I looked over and he called a block,” Davis said. ”I guess I was surprised but after seeing how they were calling the game the whole way, I just wanted to make sure I made the shot.”
