LIRR commuters face delays after rail breaks

Commuters heading to Long Island this afternoon face delays after a rail broke in an Amtrak tunnel, authorities said.

Riders heading east on the LIRR are seeing delays of twenty minutes after a rail broke in one of Amtrak’s four East River tunnels about 4:30 p.m., according to an MTA spokesman.

Some trains might be canceled, and the MTA is asking customers to check their train status online at www.mta.info.

Riders along the Hempstead and Far Rockaway branches will have to travel to Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, and can use the 2 and 3 subway lines to head there from Penn Station.

Service to Penn Station from Jamaica has been suspended, the spokesman added.

Amtrak crews are making repairs in the tunnel, and service is expected to be restored by 7 p.m.
