Cosmos sticking with Queens native Guenzatti

The New York Cosmos continued a busy offseason week. A day after adding NASL Best XI striker Hans Denissen, they extended midfielder Sebastián Guenzatti’s contract.

“Last season was an amazing experience to be a part of the Cosmos, and I can’t wait to build on that in 2014,” said the 22-year-old Guenzatti, who was a regular starter last season and also started the 2013 Soccer Bowl championship game. “This team means so much to our community and I’m very excited to play in New York again this year.”

Guenzatti — a Queens product — made 10 appearances (with one goal and one assist) during the regular season and was named to the NASL Team of the Week during Week 7 of the Fall Season.

“Sebastián is a gifted young player who continues to improve and has a lot of potential to grow,” said Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese. “He’s also a New Yorker, and I believe it’s important that we have a strong core of local talent at the club.”

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Guenzatti played for Uruguayan Segunda Division side Huracán FC before joining the Cosmos. He spent his teenage years in College Point and starred at Francis Lewis High School in Fresh Meadows.
