Ambassador Caroline: Bam

WASHINGTON — Caroline Kennedy is finally getting into the family business.

President Obama plans to nominate her as ambassador to Japan, officials said yesterday.

Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, has been rumored to be the choice for the prestigious post for months.

But before she can jet to Tokyo, her nomination will have to clear the Senate, which just last week broke through gridlock and reached a deal to move a group of Obama’s executive nominations.

Kennedy, who lost out on an appointment to the Senate seat left by Hillary Rodham Clinton’s move to the State Department in 2009, would “be a great choice. I like her,” said Sen. Charles Schumer.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) added, “At this point, she is the remaining legacy of her family, and I think she has carried that legacy with great distinction.”

Kennedy backed Obama in his 2008 presidential campaign.
