He’s george-ous!

Less than 24 hours after his father said, “We’re still working on a name,” Kensington Palace revealed that Prince William and Kate Middleton were “delighted to announce” that they had chosen George Alexander Louis for their 2-day-old son.

The name was a bonanza for British bettors — who had made “George” a lopsided favorite in heavy, legal wagering — and triggered a storm of speculation by royal watchers over why it was chosen.

George is one of the most popular names for British kings, exceeded only by Henry and Edward, and was last taken by Queen Elizabeth’s father, who reigned as George VI from 1936 to 1952.

The name was announced hours after the queen got her firsthand look at the most famous infant on earth, during a visit to Kensington Palace in which she must have been told the name.

Royal biographer Robert Lacey said the choice “will, I imagine, give her majesty great pleasure.”

“I think Prince William said he wanted to get to know him before they chose the name,” he added, “so they must feel he is a George.”

It’s not unusual for a royal to have multiple names. Prince William has four — William Arthur Philip Louis — as does his father, Prince Charles, who is Charles Philip Arthur George.

There has never been an English King Louis. But it was a natural additional choice in view of Lord Louis Mountbatten, a war-hero second cousin of the queen.

As for Alexander, the best guess yesterday was that it was chosen because the queen was given the name Elizabeth Alexandra Mary when she was born in 1926.

The newborn had been known unofficially as Baby Cambridge since his much-anticipated birth on Monday.

By British law, the duke and duchess of Cambridge had weeks to come up with a name, but they did so quickly. Charles and Princess Diana took a week before picking William’s names when he was born in 1982, and the queen took a month to reveal Charles’ names in 1948.

Yesterday’s announcement does not guarantee that if the prince is eventually crowned he will be known as George VII. It will be up to him.

Aside from getting a name, “His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge” kept a low profile yesterday. He was hidden in a back seat with his mother as a Land Rover drove him and his parents to the Middleton family home in Bucklebury, where he is expected to spend at least the next few days.
