Rangel eyes ‘successor’ Dave

WASHINGTON — Rep. Charlie Rangel says he has talked to David Paterson about running for Rangel’s job next year, describing the ex-governor as an “excellent” candidate for the position.

Rangel (top), 83, has been interviewing potential successors in case he decides not to seek a 23rd term.

He recently met with Paterson (bottom), a longtime Harlem ally, to chat about a possible move to Washington.

“We have talked about it. Of course, I have not decided what I’m going to do,” said Rangel.

“I think that he would be an excellent member of Congress and he’s an outstanding public servant.”

Paterson, who had a rocky term as governor when he took over after the resignation of disgraced Gov. Eliot Spitzer, has publicly expressed interest in replacing Rangel.

“I’m definitely looking at it,” Paterson told The Associated Press, adding that he’d run only if Rangel decides to retire.

Rangel is the third-longest- serving member of Congress.
