Ed Fountaine’s Stakes Spot Plays

Ruthless

Aqueduct, eighth race. Purse: $75,000. 6 furlongs, 3-year-old fillies. Post: 3:48 p.m.

LOWDOWN:
Kimono set the pace to mid-stretch going two turns last out before she was run down by stablemate Princess of Sylmar, who came back to romp in the Busanda. Now the Todd Pletcher-trained Bernardini filly, who cost $550,000 at auction, cuts back to six furlongs, and it is worth noting her two best races came when she was sprinting last summer.

FORT LAUDERDALE

Gulfstream Park, 10th race. Grade 2. Purse: $200,000. 1 1/16 miles, turf, 3-year-olds and up. Post 5:05 p.m.

LOWDOWN: After battling into the stretch in his final two starts last year, Dominus flattened out to finish off the board in the Shadwell Turf Mile and Ack Ack on dirt. But anyone who saw him win his two starts at Saratoga last summer coming off a year’s layoff, including a score in the Bernard Baruch on turf, knows that at his best, this 5-year-old son of Dominus can be a world-beater.

SAN FERNANDO

Santa Anita, seventh race. Grade 2. Purse: $150,000. 1 1/16 miles, 4-year-olds. Post: 6:36 p.m.

LOWDOWN:
Tritap, a Tapit colt who cost $450,000 as a yearling, has always been a colt with potential, and he finally might be ready to break through in his first start this year after posting some sharp works over this track. Last year, these same connections — owner Winchell Thoroughbreds, trainer Steve Asmussen, jockey Corey Nakatani — won the San Fernando with another son of Tapit, Tapizar, who came back to win the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile over this track.

TV: HRTV, TVG, NYRA Channel 71.

LAST WEEK: At Aqueduct, Princess of Sylmar won the Busanda paying $3.90, $2.50, $2.10; Vyjack won the Jerome paying $4.30, $3.30, $2.90; Channel Lady (5-2) was second in the Marshua’s River paying $4 to place, $3 to show.
