Bagging the ‘bagel pol’

The Issue: Larry Seabrook’s five-year sentence for corruption involving $2 million in taxpayer funds.

***

I am absolutely disgusted by the slap on the wrist ex-City Councilman Larry Seabrook got after scamming $2 million of taxpayer money for his own greed (“Seabrook Sent Off,” Editorial, Jan. 10).

I am sick of hearing that a convicted politician received consideration because of his many years of service, even though he is a crook.

Under that rationale, that politician only became a crook after serving in the Assembly and Senate.

If a politician is convicted of a felony, he should be sentenced accordingly and lose his benefits. If such a law affected all politicians in the state, they would think twice before stealing from the people they are elected to serve.

Unfortunately, those same politicians write and approve the laws, so don’t hold your breath.

Seabrook has been tried, convicted and sentenced for misappropriation of public funds in the tribunal of The Post.

The popular cry surrounding Seabrook’s trial drowns out the quieter perception that he was guilty of trusting the wrong people and stepping on the wrong toes.

What he has worked for in a long career of public service has been held as naught.

The erudition, decency and dignity he maintained throughout his career has earned him the epithet “Bagel Pol.”

The Post carries a powerful message to a sick society: Steal billions and get bailed out by the government. So be careful to steal enough to buy your way out of the consequences.
