OIL FOILS SUMMER TRAVELS

ALBANY – Eight out of 10 New Yorkers say they’re going to cut back on their summer vacations because of the runaway cost of gasoline, according to a poll released yesterday.

Democrats and Republicans were in rare agreement, with 81 percent and 82 percent, respectively, planning to spend less on summer travel.

The Siena College poll also found 73 percent of New Yorkers favoring a reduction in the state’s gasoline tax, a proposal backed by Republicans in the Legislature and by Gov. Paterson.

Mayor Bloomberg, however, blasted a plan to suspend the federal gas tax embraced by Republican presidential hopeful John McCain and by Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton.

“We’re trying to discourage people from driving and we’re trying to end our energy dependence and we’re trying to have more money to build infrastructure,” said Bloomberg.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan) has vowed to block any cut in state gasoline taxes.
