This week’s couple: Missed connection

When it comes to dating, you get what you put into it — but only sometimes. For example, when Liz, 31, met with Seth, 34, only one of them made an attempt to make the most of their time together at Lugo Caffe near Madison Square Garden. The other seemed to care more about the food in front of them instead of the person across from them. Find out who tried their best and who tried some items on the menu.

He said:

While waiting for Liz, I occupied myself by chatting with the hostess about the absurdity of this blind date. When Liz arrived, she was cute and a very obviously sweet person.

We had a pretty good rapport. Liz is great at asking questions, and we had common interests — an addiction to TV, Jewish mothers and NYU degrees.

But dinner at Lugo Caffe was the highlight. I had veal piccata and cheesecake for dessert. The place was kind of empty, but it was nice.

By the end of the date, it was obvious we didn’t have chemistry. I know when a girl is interested in me, and Liz wasn’t. We left the date with a handshake and good luck wishes.

She said:

I arrived at 8:05, but I hate being late, so I felt bad. Seth seemed pretty friendly, though, and comfortable. He was very chatty, so I asked him about his work, and it sounded as though he was busy with a lot of different projects in musical theater.

We found some common ground when we talked about TV shows — but for the most part, we didn’t have much in common. When Seth didn’t order a drink and said he doesn’t like alcohol, my attempts at breaking the ice felt a little futile. I ordered a beer anyway.

The food and service at Lugo Caffe were both excellent. The area around Penn Station can be grimy, so I’m glad to know it’s an option if I meet someone near there.

At the end of the meal, we had a graceful parting. We had a mutual respect for each other, but there just wasn’t any chemistry. I wished him good luck with his Web series.
