Ex-Mike deputy to divorce

A former deputy mayor forced to resign in 2011 after being accused of assaulting his wife has filed for divorce after 24 years of marriage, according to a report.

Stephen Goldsmith quietly resigned after his wife, Margaret, called Washington, DC, cops over an alleged assault at their townhouse on July 30, 2011.

“As you can imagine, this is a difficult time for the entire Goldsmith family,” said spokeswoman Kate Snedeker in an e-mail to the Indianapolis Star.

“Your support and respect for the family’s privacy are much appreciated.”

Goldsmith is a former mayor of Indianapolis.

Mayor Bloomberg opted not to reveal the real reason behind Goldsmith’s abrupt resignation and instead said that Goldsmith wanted to pursue private-sector jobs.

But Hizzoner faced heavy criticism after The Post exclusively revealed the true reason for the deputy mayor’s departure.

Goldsmith’s spouse told cops that he shoved her, and he resigned several days after the incident.

He had been a Bloomberg deputy for just over a year.

Goldsmith, an attorney, was eventually cleared of all charges.

He is now a professor at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
