Hong Kong-born action-movie star Jackie Chan is in hot water, after he said Chinese people would be better served by authoritarian rule and not democracy.
“I’m not sure if it’s good to have freedom or not,” Chan, 55, told a business forum in the southern Chinese province of Hainan.
“I’m gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled,” he said. “If we’re not being controlled, we’ll just do what we want.”
The “Rush Hour” star’s odd comments on Saturday drew immediate outrage from Hong Kong and Taiwan, where Chinese enjoy degrees of freedom far beyond that of mainland citizens.
