Fumes make jet crew ill

A US Airways pilot and three crew members were hospitalized yesterday after they were overcome by fumes in the cockpit of a flight from Boston to La Guardia Airport, sources said.

The incident began soon after Flight 2123 departed from Boston at about 10:25 a.m. with 36 passengers aboard.

Fumes made the pilot, co-pilot and two flight attendants ill, sources said. Nevertheless, pilot Luis Montavo, 44, was able to land the aircraft, an Embraer 190.

Once on the ground, Montavo and the other victims were taken to a hospital for observation. A spokesman for US Airways said that none the passengers had fallen ill.

“We obvioiusly take these incidents very seriously,” the spokesman said.

The cause of the fumes was under investigation.
