Koch in turn for the worse

Former Mayor Ed Koch is now in intensive care.

Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, his cardiologist and personal physician, moved Koch from the regular ward at New York Presbyterian Medical Center to intensive care yesterday afternoon, said Koch spokesman George Arzt.

“He wanted to monitor the mayor more closely,” Arzt said.

The 88-year-old ex-mayor returned to the hospital on Monday, two days after he was released following latest treatment for fluid in the lungs.

Koch initially went to the hospital on Jan. 19. He also was hospitalized in December with a respiratory infection and in September with anemia.

Arzt said that doctors were still trying to reduce the fluid. Koch also was showing an iron deficiency.

The three-term mayor and former congressman was first elected to City Hall in 1977. Since leaving elected office, he has worked as a lawyer and remained an active presence on the city’s political scene.

A new documentary about Koch’s career premiered at the Museum of Modern Art on Tuesday. He had been expected to attend before falling ill.
