Rescuers save worker who had foot trapped in car atop Roosevelt Island tram

A worker was left perilously hanging mid-air from a tower of the iconic Roosevelt Island Tramway today after his leg somehow became caught in a piece of machinery, officials said.

He was trapped on the Manhattan side, according to the FDNY.

The tram halted services, but it was unclear if people were trapped aboard cars.

A 911 caller reported the man dangling in the air near Roosevelt Island around noon, today, fire officials said.

The FDNY and members of the NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit put him in a rescue basket and are tending to his injuries before lowering him to the station, authorities said.

In 2006, mechanical problems caused the tram to be stuck for seven hours trapping 69 people inside. A similar problem occurred in 2005 trapping about 80 people for 90 minutes.
