Niners’ Smith not for free

Jim Harbaugh said yesterday a team can’t have enough good quarterbacks. Translation: Prying Alex Smith away from the 49ers may not be all that easy — for the Jets or anyone else.

The Jets have said they will bring in a veteran quarterback to challenge incumbent Mark Sanchez, though landing Smith might be a bit of a reach for a team expected to have significant salary-cap issues.

The 49ers coach, meeting the media in the wake of Sunday’s Super Bowl XLVII loss to the Ravens, said he’d have a discussion with Smith, his one-time starter who was displaced by Colin Kaepernick after suffering a concussion in November.

Smith is guaranteed $1 million from the 49ers, and that would become $8.5 million guaranteed — his 2013 salary — if he is still on the roster on April 1. San Francisco still could trade him after that day with another team likely picking up his salary.

“I have great respect for Alex, great personal friendship, togetherness with Alex, and the team,” Harbaugh said. “We feel great about our quarterback situation and can’t have enough good quarterbacks.”

Harbaugh was asked if the team would release Smith if he requested.

“I don’t think any player has those wishes granted that [is] under contract,” he said. “And everything is different. Every scenario is unique and certainly something that we’re not going to delve into and get into specifics at this point.”

Smith did not meet with the media yesterday as the 49ers packed up and headed into the offseason.
