MLB: Volquez slated for elbow op

Reds right-hander Edinson Volquez is scheduled to undergo elbow surgery tomorrow. It was not immediately clear if he will have a ligament-replacement procedure, known as Tommy John surgery.

* Right-hander Justin Masterson was added to the Indians’ roster, one day after he was acquired from the Red Sox for catcher Victor Martinez. Masterson will initially work out of the bullpen, although the team plans to convert him into a starter this year.

* The Athletics retired Rickey Henderson‘s No. 24, honoring the prolific leadoff hitter less than a week after he was inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame. Henderson, who grew up in Oakland, repeated a line he used in Cooperstown, saying he was “very very humbled.”

TENNIS: Venus reaches finals

Second-seeded Venus Williams was at the top of her game as she advanced to the finals of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, Calif., beating third-seeded Elena Dementieva 6-0, 6-1 in a match that lasted just over an hour.

Williams, who won for the 10th time in 11 matches, plays Marion Bartoli, a three-set winner over Samantha Stosur, for the title.

* In Umag, Croatia, top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko cruised into the final of the Croatia Open by beating Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-1, 6-1. The Russian will face former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero, who beat seventh-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-1, 6-7 (1), 7-5 in the other semifinal.

* In Gstaad, Switzerland, unseeded Thomaz Bellucci and Andreas Beck advanced to the final of the Swiss Open, where both will seek a first career ATP Tour title.

BOXING: Gatti second autopsy

The family of Arturo Gatti has hired a prominent U.S. pathologist to oversee a second autopsy in the death of the ex-boxing champ. The autopsy taking place in Montreal yesterday is being assisted by Michael Baden, the host of the HBO show “Autopsy.”

* In Rancho Mirage, Calif., Timothy Bradley defended his WBO 140-pound title by battering Nate Campbell, whose eye injury forced the fight to be stopped after three rounds. Bradley (25-0, 12 KOs) rode the energy of his hometown crowd in a dynamic performance, although the 37-year-old Campbell (33-6-1) vehemently argued his cut was caused by Bradley’s head, which would have made the bout a no-contest.

Undefeated Devon Alexander, 22, won his first world title when Junior Witter quit before the ninth round, citing a hand injury.

ETC: Keselowski wins in Nationwide

In Newton, Iowa, Brad Keselowski passed Kyle Busch with eight laps left and held on to win the inaugural Nationwide Series race at Iowa Speedway. Keselowski stayed on the track during a caution flag late in the race, a risk that paid off with his second victory of the year.

* In Gladeville, Tenn., Ron Hornaday Jr. raced to his record fifth straight NASCAR Camping World Trucks victory.

* The Thunder signed free agent guard Kevin Ollie. The 36-year-old Ollie has appeared in 637 games over 12 seasons for 11 teams.
