CHARTER CRITICS FLIP-FLOP

State lawmakers are dropping their controversial bid to reduce the number of charter-school authorizers in New York to just one, The Post has learned.

Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer (D- Westchester) plans to withdraw her bill — which was strongly opposed by charter-school supporters — that would have given the Board of Regents veto power over charters approved by the State University.

The two organizations now function independently, while the city’s Department of Education can recommend charter schools for certification by the Regents.
