An apologetic Queens man was sentenced to more than two years behind bars today for causing a deadly car crash on New Year’s Day 2012.
Alexis Morillo, 29 was sentenced to 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison for crashing his 2007 Mistubishi Galant into a livery cab, which burst into flames and trapped victim Yingyot Upachopkool.
“I want to apologize to the family for what I’ve done,” Morillo said, before Queens Supreme Court Justice Gregory Lasak imposed the sentence.
Morillo was legally drunk when he caused the 5 a.m. crash, authorities said.
He pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter, in exchange for prosecutors dropping other charges that included drunken driving, driving without a license and manslaughter.
The deadly crash happened in eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway at the intersection of Maurice Avenue.
Upachopkool was burned beyond recognition inside his 2011 Lincoln.
When Morillo is released from prison, he must install an ignition interlock into any vehicle he owns. That’ll prevent the car from starting if it detects booze on his breath that’s more than the legal limit.
He’ll also be on conditional discharge three years. If he commits any other crimes, he’d be sent back to prison for the rest of his vehicular manslaughter sentence.
